11. Divine plan

“The divine plan” is the way Christians traditionally explain things like amputations, cancer, tornadoes, car accidents, etc., etc., etc.

Usually it is the preachers of nothing (priests) who talk about this nonsense, if a person dies a tragic and painful death due to cancer, for example, she will have died as part of the divine plan, her death has a purpose, god called her back for a reason. Even if something bad happens to a person, it is actually good because it is part of the divine plan.

Because god made us for a reason, he also decides when we are born and how long we live. He has planned the days of our lives in advance, choosing the exact time of our birth and death.

The Bible says, “Still unformed thy eyes saw me, and all was written in thy book; my days were fixed, when yet there was none.”

There is also this: Regardless of the circumstances of our birth or who our parents are, god had a plan when he created us. According to this Relidiocy therefore, god plans everything.

Stop and think for a moment:

“He has planned in advance the days of your life, choosing the exact time of your birth and death.” Let us examine a simple implication of this statement:

This therefore means that god has predetermined every abortion that has taken place on our planet. If the concept of a “divine plan” were true, it would follow that god wants us to have abortions. Every single abortion is planned by god.  Second, it follows that both the mother who requests the abortion and the doctor who performs it are blameless. Because it is god who planned the abortion (god chose the “exact time” of death), the mother and the doctor are simply puppets who are executing the divine plan, right? Why do Christians fight against abortion? If abortion is part of the divine plan, why are they opposing it?

God is the almighty king of the universe, he is good and merciful and, his plan is to have millions of children die by abortion. If the divine plan is real, then each of these abortions was meticulously planned by god. If god does not want us to have abortions, then are believers wrong to think that god has a plan? If god has a plan, then is he not the direct cause of each abortion?

Think about it for a moment and you will begin to understand the problems with the divine plan: it makes water from all sides. Let’s try to give some concrete examples. Imagine a serial child killer who keeps his 30th victim tied up in front of him. Many entrust their prayers to god to save the child, but in the end, the child is raped and killed. What fault does the serial killer have? None! It was god who decided the fate of that child. The thousands of casualties caused by the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States were all designed by god. The group of terrorists adhering to al Qaeda are not to blame. Even the earthquakes and tidal waves that claim thousands of victims each time are the work of god. Think of Adolf Hitler, he was evil personified, he is well known for all the atrocities he caused. I would now like you to consider this sentence, “Hitler is part of the divine plan.”

If god has a divine plan, then he also had a divine plan for Hitler, for the serial child killer, for the suicide bombers and for all the victims of tsunamis, earthquakes, etc….. Indeed, any natural disaster was carefully planned by god.

Now, let us imagine that you say a prayer in this kind of Universe. What difference will it make? God has his plan and this is going on like a train on the tracks. If god has a plan, then every person who died in the Holocaust, died for a reason: they had to die was already determined. Therefore, the victims of the Holocaust could pray all day, but they would still die.

The idea of a “plan” contradicts the idea of “relationship with god based on prayer and response,” right? Yet, every Christian seems to cling to both ideas, in spite of the unsolvable problem the two ideas create.

Think about the plan that god has for you personally. If it happens that the plan says you will die under a bus tomorrow, or that terrorists will blow you up, or that you will be shot in the head four times, then that will happen.

The same for every disease. If you contract cancer this afternoon and die in three months, this is the divine plan for you. Praying for cancer to cure you is a waste of time. Your imaginary god has decided that you must die and you will die. He has predetermined the exact time of your death. There is nothing you can do to change the plan; no amount of praying will help because your death has already been determined.

Why did you get married? You had no choice. God had predetermined your marriage in minute detail. Your imaginary god knew that these two individuals (your parents) possessed exactly the genetic makeup necessary to create the specific “you” he had in mind. They had the DNA with which god wanted you to be “made,” so your spouse was chosen by god for you so that you could create the children who are part of his plan. You also had no choice about the number of children to have; god had predetermined their births and/or deaths.

In addition, this kind of Universe indicates that the killer, the suicide bombers and Hitler were not at fault. Hitler was not “evil,” because Hitler had no free will. Hitler was simply an actor forced to play his role in the Holocaust, god had planned the deaths in great detail.  Hitler had to have those people killed.  Hitler was god’s puppet as he made sure that those millions of deaths happened in perfect time. Likewise, then, every murder is without culpability. Since god planned each of our deaths in great detail, murderers are actually essential in the divine plan. Why should we punish them? We should reward them for carrying out the divine will. What if you were raped tomorrow and became pregnant? God willed it because He had planned the exact time of that child’s birth and death. God had preordained your rape and the rapist was god’s puppet, in the end he is innocent, so instead of hating the rapist, you should celebrate the divine design and celebrate. Praise be to almighty, good and merciful god.

Do you believe that murderers and rapists should be rewarded? Do you believe that Hitler was sent by god to kill millions of people in the Holocaust? Do you believe that god is the direct cause of every abortion that occurs on this planet? Do you believe that you had no choice about number of children to have? Probably not.

But that is what you say when you claim that Hitler or cancer or anything else is part of “divine design.” If you think about this as intelligent people, you will understand that the statement “it is part of divine design” is one of the most meaningless palliatives. When you sit down and think about it using your brain, this statement is meaningless. The lack of meaning shows us how god is merely imaginary.
